The Acer 3G Chromebook was purchased for my wife who is 65 years of age. She is not particularly computer literate. It does exactly what it is advertised to do.The WiFi worked perfectly. There was an initial problem setting up the 3G Verizon data connection for the 100 MB of free data but Verizon was very helpful and got me to a Chromebook Ninja. He who was quickly able to reset the modem and got us connected. To contact a Chromebook Ninja, go to [....] and look for the Ninja tab.The Chromebook concept makes common sense for most people who are not heavy users of specialized software programs. I am in the legal profession and would use the Chromebook for my computer needs while traveling save for the inability of Google docs to effectively deal with WordPerfect documents. That said, the Chromebook is clearly more cost effective than anything Apple produces. All in all, Chromebooks are the wave of the future; that is, they are very easy to learn and use and since everything is stored in the cloud they are safe and trouble free.

While the Chromebook is a great concept that I would like to see pursued further, the main issue with using the internet for all computer functions is the fact that internet is not always available, and 3G coverage is expensive. The description of the item says that verizon provides a free 100 Mb per month contract for two years, yet when I tried to set up the mobile internet, it did not function. After calling Verizon and taking it into a store to get it set up, I learned that this offer had been depreciated a few years ago. In the meantime though, I had the time to mess around with the computer on my home WiFi connection, and I am a huge fan of the almost instantaneous wake and shut-down times. It powers on from total shut-down in the time that it takes most computers to wake from sleep, and wakes from sleep as soon as you open the lid. I would have kept it if it weren't for the fact that the 3G coverage was not possible.

I returned by Chromebook after a couple days of testing. This is a great concept, but I think the hardware is too wimpy. The Chromebook crashed numerous times when I tried to access ESPN3, and it struggled with Google Reader. Other sites were a bit laggy, but tolerable. The notion of a light, fast netbook for browsing is terrific, but next time the hardware need to be more robust. I have no doubt this is the future of computing, but it is surely not the present.
